Clearing out a Tempe home: what to know.

What tends to matter when the junk is in Tempe, from the city’s own rules and the way its neighborhoods are built.

  1. Alley upkeep is the owner's job

The City of Tempe tells residents on alley collection that they are required to maintain the alleyways, keep tree limbs no lower than 13.5 feet above them and clear weeds from their property to the center of the alley. Outside a bulk week, anything stacked by the back gate is the owner's to deal with, since the City of Tempe does not collect material left outside the trash container.

  2. Landscaper clippings stay out

The City of Tempe bars landscapers from setting out green organics for collection; only residents who do their own yard work may place them, in a pile kept separate from bulk trash. The City of Tempe's design guidelines describe the Borden Homes Historic District as small one-story houses on large lots with mature shade trees, so after a hired tree trim there, the cuttings need another way out.

  3. Guesthouses and converted garages

The City of Tempe describes University Park as mostly single-family homes, some with detached guesthouses that are often converted garages, in an urban neighborhood near a large university. A second living space means a second set of beds, desks and couches to clear when an occupant moves out or the house changes hands.

  4. Ten-day window before bulk week

The City of Tempe collects bulk trash every other month and wants items out by 6 a.m. on Monday of the scheduled week, no earlier than 10 days before, with alley households placing bulk in the alley along their fence line without blocking it. The City of Tempe also caps each collection at 10 cubic yards, about the size of a small SUV, so a move-out that lands in the wrong month either waits or needs another route.

Before and after photos from our own work around the East Valley.

Before: a large pile of cut mesquite branches covering a gravel backyard beside a shed
After: the same backyard cleared to bare gravel, the shed and block wall clear
A backyard buried in branches. Cut mesquite piled across the yard, loaded up and hauled off.
Before: an old wooden swing set frame standing against a block wall in a backyard
After: the swing set gone, only a dark patch of soil left on the gravel by the wall
An old swing set, gone. Frame taken down and hauled away, nothing left but the footprint.

From a customer

I used Jaime and his crew for the final clean up after an estate sale at my mother's home in Ahwatukee. They removed a hot tub as well as all remaining items in the home. The place was left cleaner than it had been before the sale. They thought of everything and had all the equipment needed on site. The estate agent said it was the best clean up job she had ever seen!

How often does Tempe pick up bulk trash?

Every other month. The City of Tempe collects bulk trash and green organics on a rotating schedule by area, and items have to be out by 6 a.m. on Monday of your collection week, no earlier than 10 days before. If your next week is too far away, call or text (602) 486-2331 with your address and what needs to go.

Can I leave old furniture in the alley behind my Tempe house?

Only for your bulk week. The City of Tempe tells households with alley collection to place bulk items in the alley along their fence line, without blocking the alley, no earlier than 10 days before their scheduled week. The rest of the time, alley residents are required to keep the alleyways from becoming littered. If the timing does not work, we can load it straight from the house or yard; call or text to confirm your address.

Will Tempe's bulk pickup take a refrigerator?

Not if it has freon. The City of Tempe excludes appliances with freon from bulk collection and accepts refrigerators, freezers, A/C units, water heaters and stoves at its Household Products Collection Center at 1320 E. University Drive. We load and haul appliances along with other household junk; call or text to confirm your address.

It depends on how much there is and how hard it is to reach. Tell us what you have, or text a photo, and you get a quote first. Our cost guide explains what moves the price.
